Keeping the Air in & around Your Home Clean in PA, including Wexford, Bradfordwoods & New kensington.

Air Quality Tips
Avoid health problems associated with indoor and outdoor air pollution

In addition to keeping you warmer in winter and cooler in summer, air-sealing your home is a great way to improve its indoor air quality. Less unconditioned, unfiltered air will be sucked indoors from outside and from the basement or crawlspace. There are, however, a number of other things you can do to ensure clean, healthy air.

Here are some tips to help reduce problems caused by polluted indoor and outdoor air:

An electronic whole-house air cleaner, such as this model from Aprilaire, installs near your air handling equipment. It electronically charges particles as they pass and then uses an opposing charge to trap them like a magnet.

  • Invest in a whole house air cleaner. Kennihan's Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning offers Aprilaire air cleaners that are installed as part of your home’s heating and cooling system. In our experience, they offer the best way to rid your home of dust, dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, pollen, bacteria and viruses, smoke and more. There are a number of Aprilaire models from which to choose. Allow one of our experts to assist you in making the right choice for your heating and cooling system.
  • Install a dehumidifier in your basement or crawlspace. By keeping indoor humidity levels low during the summer, mold will not be able to thrive and release mold spores that can cause respiratory ailments.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation without wasting energy. Once your home is well air-sealed and insulated, consider a heat recovery ventilator. Without adequate fresh air exchange, odors, moisture, VOCs, carbon dioxide, soil gases, and mold spores get trapped inside. A heat recovery ventilator provides balanced, energy efficient, whole-home fresh air exchange.

Additional tips from the American Lung Association

  • Stay aware of local weather reports for news of pollution blown in from fires nearby or other areas. Many communities offer forecasts for the next day's expected air pollution levels. Levels predicted to be orange, red or purple days signal unhealthy levels of ozone. However, pollution from fires may bring unhealthy levels of soot or fine particle pollution, which may be on days when ozone levels are not high.
  • On days when air pollution from fires (or other sources) is predicted to be high, limit time spent outdoors and avoid exercise outside, especially if you have asthma, lung disease, or are a child or senior.
  • Use a high efficiency furnace filter and replace it every two to three months. A high efficiency filter not only protects the furnace, but can also capture up to 30 times more pollutants such as smoke, pet dander and pollen than standard fiberglass filters.
  • Run the furnace fan continuously regardless of the outdoor temperature so air is always passing through the filter (not only when the furnace or air conditioner is running). Consult with a Kennihan technician to determine whether this is feasible with your current air handling equipment.
  • clean air filterHave a professional inspect the furnace once a year to make se that the air intake is adequate and the unit is operating at peak efficiency. A smooth-running furnace helps the filter capture more soot particles in the home.
  • Prohibit smoking in the home.
  • Make sure gas cooking appliances are vented to the outdoors.
